How to Blend Essential Oils with Carrier Oils
Why You Need a Carrier Oil
Essential oils are highly concentrated plant extracts. Applied directly to the skin without dilution, they can cause irritation, sensitisation, or even burns in some cases. A carrier oil acts as a safe, neutral base that dilutes the essential oil to a skin-friendly concentration while also helping it absorb effectively.
Beyond safety, carrier oils bring their own benefits — many are rich in fatty acids, vitamins, and antioxidants that nourish and protect the skin.
Choosing the Right Carrier Oil
Different carrier oils suit different skin types and applications. Lighter oils such as sweet almond and grapeseed absorb quickly and work well for facial blends or massage. Richer oils like jojoba and avocado are more nourishing and better suited to dry or mature skin.

Dilution Ratios: Getting It Right
The standard dilution ratio for adults is 2–3% essential oil to carrier oil. In practical terms, this means:
- 1% dilution — 6 drops of essential oil per 30ml of carrier oil (suitable for facial use or sensitive skin)
- 2% dilution — 12 drops per 30ml (ideal for general body use and massage)
- 3% dilution — 18 drops per 30ml (suitable for targeted application on specific areas)
Always start at the lower end of the range, particularly if you are new to essential oils or have sensitive skin.

Storage and Shelf Life
Store your blended oils in dark glass bottles away from direct sunlight and heat. Most blends will keep for 3–6 months depending on the carrier oil used. Label each bottle with the blend name and date so you always know what you are reaching for.
Blending your own aromatherapy oils is one of the most rewarding aspects of a home wellness practice — and with the right ingredients, it is simpler than you might think.
